At Our Daily Bread (ODB) we take pride in our ability to re-purpose donated food into hundreds of meals a day. In January 2018, ODB processed approximately 15,000 lbs. of food donated from the local food industry, school groups, church groups and individual volunteers. If you were one of the giving souls who delivered food to us, chances are you were greeted by our esteemed new Inventory Coordinator, Tom Recck.
Tom, a transplant from Wethersfield, Connecticut, has a mile-long list of volunteer experience. He began volunteering at ODB in January 2017 because he had never done anything at a soup kitchen and he wanted give it a try — he’s been with us ever since. After quickly falling in love with our mission, Tom served as a volunteer 3-4 days a week for 11 months before he was officially hired at the end of November.
As Inventory Coordinator, Tom’s role includes overseeing the receipt, storage and utilization of all in-kind food donations and most importantly rotating, storing and inventorying food so that it is easily accessible to Chef Garland for planning the daily meal. According to Tom, working at ODB “provides a warm feeling because you are constantly giving back and helping others.”
Tom, who describes himself as a “jack of all trades” is also a partner in AmRide, a chauffeur-for-hire service. In his spare time Tom enjoys hiking, movies and snow skiing.
